Richard Rox Anderson, MD, FAAD
BIOGRAPHY
R. Rox Anderson MD is Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School, the Lancer Endowed Chair in Dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and Director of the Wellman Center at MGH. After undergraduate studies at MIT, he earned the MD degree and completed residency in dermatology at Harvard, then joined the faculty. Renowned for his pioneering work in laser dermatology, Dr. Anderson contributed selective photothermolysis theory, and many targeted treatments for vascular and pigmented lesions, tattoos, hair removal, acne and recently for neurofibromatosis. He introduced fractional lasers and studied their use for rehabilitation of burn scars and treatment of photoaging. He co-invented laser reflectance confocal microscopy for skin imaging, and has contributed fundamentally to photodynamic therapy, human photobiology and our understanding of skin optics. He has co-authored more than 300 publications, over 60 patents. He received the AAD’s Gold Medal award, and in 2022 was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame.
