BIOGRAPHY

Becky Strong: Patient Advocate and Supporter of Dermatologists Becky Strong, a registered nurse from Michigan, is both a dedicated healthcare professional and a patient with pemphigus vulgaris. Her challenging journey to diagnosis spanned 17 months, involved six physician specialists, multiple dental consultations, and numerous rounds of incorrect treatments. She resides in Michigan with her husband, Tim, and their two children. As the Outreach Director for the International Pemphigus & Pemphigoid Foundation (IPPF), Becky is a fervent advocate for patients with pemphigus and pemphigoid. She empowers patients to find their voices and educates them about their conditions. Becky oversees nine support groups, six Peer Coaches, and hosts nearly two dozen Patient Education Webinars annually. Since 2016, Becky has been a strong supporter of dermatologists and advocates for important legislation at the American Academy of Dermatology Association Legislative Conference. She has spoken at the AAD Annual Meeting since 2017 and has participated in the Innovations Academy since 2023. She actively engages in Hill meetings as part of the American Academy of Dermatology Association Legislative Conference, Rare Disease Week on the Hill, and Rare Across America. Additionally, she regularly participates in in-district meetings with her representatives, advocating for policies that benefit dermatologists and their patients. Her advocacy efforts have been recognized at various platforms, including speaking at Rare Disease Day in Michigan under the National Organization for Rare Disorders' Rare Action Network. She is a member of the Coalition of Skin Diseases, advocating for individuals with skin conditions. In 2023, she shared her personal experiences during a congressional briefing on Capitol Hill, highlighting the importance of collaboration between patients and dermatologists. Through her position with the IPPF, Becky contributes to multiple research projects, ensuring the patient's perspective is heard. Her work has led to co-authoring several articles in peer-reviewed journals, emphasizing the critical role of dermatologists in patient care and research. Beyond her advocacy and research contributions, Becky travels to medical and dental schools across the nation, including 22 dental schools, to share insights about the patient journey and the invaluable support provided by dermatologists. She is a frequent speaker at medical and dental conferences and has participated in live and enduring continuing education courses with the American Dental Association. Becky's unique blend of professional expertise and personal experience makes her an invaluable advocate, educator, and supporter of dermatologists in the field of rare autoimmune diseases.
