BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Gilchrest graduated from MIT and Harvard Medical School, trained in Internal Medicine and then Dermatology including a year-long Photobiology Fellowship, followed by a year of laboratory-based training at MIT. After 6 years on the Harvard/MGH faculty, she joined the faculty at Tufts New England Medical Center and USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging. Two years later she was recruited as Chair of Dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine, where for the next 23 years she headed a large primarily NIH-funded research group and clinical training program. Her work focussed on cellular and molecular aspects of skin aging, pigmentation, and UV-induced damage responses, but also included clinical studies involving therapeutic effects of light on the skin. She was active in national and international dermatologic organizations and served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology 2012-17. In 2014 she returned to MGH/Harvard to serve as mentor to younger faculty and to pursue development of discoveries from her laboratory. Dr. Gilchrest is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Inventors, and author of > 400 clinical and research articles and textbooks.
