U060 Understanding the Skin Barrier
DESCRIPTION
Open admission to eligible categories, no tuition or ticket
Skin is the largest organ, and an intact skin barrier is required to keep water in and pathogenic bacteria out. Our research has shown how disruption of the skin barrier can lead to inflammatory disorders, and how an intact skin barrier results in resolution of inflammation. In addition, restoration of barrier function can prevent neoplasia like actinic keratoses. Knowledge gained from this presentation can help the clinician better treat inflammatory disorders without the use of topical steroids
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Recognize that the skin barrier is both physical and biochemical
Discuss how impaired skin barrier results in inflammation
Assess the role of intact skin barrier in preventing both inflammatory and neoplastic disease (actinic keratoses)
