Behavioral health issues are an increasingly recognized problem in pediatric patients, and diagnoses such as depression or anxiety often exacerbate skin conditions. Common pediatric skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and acne have been associated with mental health comorbidities. Thus, it is of utmost importance for dermatologists to address these comorbidities. This session will highlight our five years of experience with the pediatric dermatology behavioral health clinic at Boston Medical Center. We will utilize a case based approach to highlight how pediatric dermatology and psychology partner together to deliver multidisciplinary care for challenging yet common scenarios.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Recognize when a behavioral health issue may be exacerbating a skin condition and conversely when a skin condition is causing psychosocial stress or behavioral health issues.
Identify common strategies to help pediatric patients and families agree to behavioral health services when needed.
Utilize brief, targeted behavioral interventions to help patients with coping, anxiety, and scratching or picking.
