When considering the diagnosis and management of hair conditions, evidence-based review of common hair care and styling practices is often overlooked. This is especially true of patients with more tightly curled hair types. This session is directed towards dermatologists and trainees that will care for patients with alopecia. It will review the characteristics of different hair types, and the ways in which hair should be cared for in patients of diverse ethnic backgrounds. In doing so, the attendee will leave this session with practical tools to instruct patients in managing their hair to prevent hair loss and support hair regrowth.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Summarize basic anatomy and characteristics of the scalp and hair in patients of diverse backgrounds.
Evaluate common hair care and styling practices and their safety for patients with underlying scalp conditions or hair shaft abnormalities.
Develop tools for building rapport with patients with alopecia from diverse ethnic backgrounds, as well as making evidence based suggestions in a culturally competent manner.
