DESCRIPTION

Open admission to eligible categories, no tuition or ticket

In 2022, a record breaking 42,800 solid organ transplants were performed in the United States. The numbers continue to increase with every year. More targeted immunosuppression and prophylaxis has led to longer life expectancies for transplant patients. Dermatologists are critical in managing the cutaneous complications of immunosuppressive medications. We are all educated on the risk of skin cancers, but patients have additional dermatologic needs including managing cutaneous opportunistic infections and drug-related cutaneous events. This session will highlight new and old opportunistic infections seen in the transplanted population, approaches for diagnosis and management. It will also review some of the immunosuppression-related cutaneous adverse events and tips for management.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.

Identify cutaneous opportunistic infections including human polyomavirus, human herpesvirus infections, and fungal infections that are over-represented in the solid organ transplantation community.

2.

Discuss diagnosis and management of these infections

3.

Review the historical immunosuppressive treatments and newer immunosuppressive treatments and identify their potential cutaneous adverse events
