DESCRIPTION

Tuition fee and ticket required for admission

This session will present a state-of-the-art understanding of skin science for practicing clinicians and high-yield knowledge for candidates preparing for the boards. We will teach the development and functions of the skin with an emphasis on cell components and structures involved in pathophysiology of skin diseases. Topics include skin embryology, differentiation and patterning; functions of keratinocytes and melanocytes; cell-cell adhesion structures; and intracellular signaling pathways and epigenetic modifications. Emphasis will be placed on clinical examples and how knowledge of skin structure and function can improve understanding of skin disease pathogenesis and managing therapeutics. This activity has been approved by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) for up to 30 Continuous Certification Program (CCP) Component 2 Self-Assessment points. For more information about CCP, please visit the ABD website at www.abderm.org

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.

Describe the embryonic origin, patterning, and structure of cells that comprise the skin and the intracellular structures that connect these cells together.

2.

Describe the functions of epidermal keratinocytes and melanocytes and their relevance in skin diseases.

3.

Name and describe the key genetic and epigenetic pathways that regulate skin homeostasis and how they are altered in skin diseases.
