U048 Radiation Therapy and the Skin: Uses and Toxicities

This session will serve as a primer for radiation therapy. Our multidisciplinary group of speakers including a radiation oncologist, basic science and translational researcher, and oncodermatologist will cover the basics of radiation therapy and its uses in dermatology, the pathophysiology of radiation dermatitis, and management strategies for acute and chronic radiation dermatitis. Our group has been researching the pathophysiology of radiation dermatitis as well as the role of radiation in treatment of keloids – work that has shown the impact of radiation dermatitis on quality of life and provided the first evidence for bacterial decolonization to prevent radiation dermatitis.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Describe the types of radiation therapy and how they vary in their impacts on the skin
Determine appropriate settings for radiation therapy in management of skin diseases such as skin cancer and keloids
Manage acute and chronic radiation dermatitis based on understanding of the underlying pathophysiology
