This session is aimed towards clinicians who wish to incorporate direct immunofluorescence in their practice. Examples from challenging cases will be used to illustrate the role of direct immunofluorescence plays in the evaluation of autoimmune blistering disorders. The limitations of direct immunofluorescence for vasculitis and connective tissue disease will be discussed. Additional topics will include practical approaches to maximize yield from direct immunofluorescence specimens, such as appropriate site selection, biopsy technique, and specimen handling.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Utilize direct immunofluorescence effectively and appropriately during the work-up of autoimmune blistering disorders
Examine the supportive role of direct immunofluorescence during the work-up of vasculitis and connective tissue disease
Select appropriate biopsy sites, biopsy techniques, transport media, and specimen storage to maximize the yield from direct immunofluorescence studies
