DESCRIPTION

Open admission to eligible categories, no tuition or ticket

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) disproportionately affects young, black, and/or female patients from disadvantaged backgrounds. It causes physical disability and psychological distress, exacerbating non-compliance with medical therapies and leading to further social and economic decline. This focus session examines how such circumstances set up both pediatric and adult HS patients for failure long before they are seen in dermatology clinics. We explore barriers to initiating a successful therapeutic relationship, strategies to overcome them, and the therapeutic algorithm that we must clearly communicate to our patients. Overcoming these barriers is crucial to help HS patients regain control of their disease and their lives.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.

Determine the most significant barriers faced by HS patients from socioeconomically underserved pediatric and adult patient populations.

2.

Formulate a clinical approach to overcoming the most significant barriers faced by patients with HS in socioeconomically underserved pediatric and adult populations.

3.

Develop a clear clinical algorithm for building a therapeutic relationship and managing HS in socioeconomically underserved pediatric and adult patients.
