DESCRIPTION

Open admission to eligible categories, no tuition or ticket

This session will be divided by six categories of cutaneous reactions caused by exposure to plants including allergic contact dermatitis, phytophotodermatitis, mechanical and chemical irritant dermatitis, immunologic contact urticaria, and non-immunologic contact urticaria. I will discuss the mechanism of each reaction and give examples of plant species that cause each reaction with a focus on the most commonly encountered wild plant species and popular garden/ house plant species. This session will also review emerging use of plant extracts in dermatology including arnica, bromeliad, and polypodium leucotomos extract.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.

Recognize the immunologic and non-immunologic mechanisms of dermatoses caused by exposure to plants.

2.

Identify dermatoses caused by exposure to various wild, garden, and house plant species and recognize representative plant species.

3.

Discuss therapeutic applications of plant extracts in dermatology.
